While many of us are desperately trying to fit some kind of self care to incorporate in weekly, the price tag on many self care items or services can break the bank or be completely out of our price range. Don’t get fooled by those expensive self-indulgences that pretend to be self-care when actually they are just money grabs. Most self care practices are free or super cheap.

What is self care?
The World Health Organization defines self care as,
the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.
While this is geared toward maintaining health, a definition that many of us would gravitate toward is
taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day. Everyday Health
In a nutshell, take care of yourself. That means your body AND mind so that you can be the best version of yourself. This will allow you to do what you want to do and do it well. With these definitions, you see just how inexpensive self care can be without breaking your wallet or your spirit. Do what you love to do – we all have those things we love to do and have a hard time find time to just DO them. Schedule time if you must but make sure that happens weekly so that you have something to look forward to and to rejuvenate that love for that special activity.

Let go of toxic people – just a no-brainer actually and it will allow you to find much more peace
Listen to music or a favorite podcast.
Try meditation – there are apps to get you started and keep you centered.
Clean as you go – this will make it easier to keep your space cleaner longer.
Stretch when you wake up – get your body ready for the day with stretches.
Do you own spa treatment – If you are like me, then you have an arsenal of spa products just cluttering your home. When was the last time you actually USED any of them? If they are not old, check the expiration dates, then mark your calendar to make sure you do it and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You bought it, so use it and understand not using it is actually wasting your money.
For me, that would be pedicures. I have EVEYTHING necessary for an upscale pedicure at in my house! From the expensive heated foot soaker with bubbles to the scrubs and foot files. I make sure to do this for myself because I paid for it and my feet are worth it.
Add a spa treatment to a weekly chore – we wash our hair weekly or bi-weekly so add a facial, pedicure or body scrub to the routine. This is a great way to ensure you get those much needed skin treatments that many of us ignore or simply forget to do. Your body will thank you.
Use a notebook or notes apps to keep track of the things you need to do.
Meal prep– this one is crucial if you find you will order out if you see the day has gotten away from you. This not only makes for cheaper meals (and in turn save you money) but more often than not, you will be eating much better in the end.
Chop it off – your hair that is. Short haircuts can be much easier for a lot of Black women and the TWA is fun and sexy for a new season. Another option is to just rock wigs and have fun while you protect your hair underneath (don’t neglect it), and get out the house quicker. Ready to wear wigs are not even expensive anymore either.

Take daily walks.
Watch how you speak to yourself to ensure it is positive.
Ask for help when you need it – Black women take on way more than we should and this bad habit takes a negative toll on our bodies. Don’t feel bad about asking for help and/or receiving it. We are worthy of help and this allows us to recharge and be our best selves.
These 15 self care tips are inexpensive and helpful for every woman. While not all may work for you, many will and they will allow you to slow down, take care of your self properly. Remember that you cannot be helpful to others before being helpful to yourself.
