Lemons are wonderful. They are a natural, mild disinfectant that is often used for natural cleansing. The acid in lemons has antiseptic properties. they are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B, Folic Acid, and minerals like phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. Women have been using lemons for years for everything from hair lightening, fighting dandruff to stopping hair fall. Here’s a super simple lemon water hair wash to help detoxify your hair for spring.

Ingredients:
2 parts lemon
3/4 parts water

Instructions:
Make a lemon cleanser by mixing 2 parts lemon with 3/4 parts water. Spray onto strands and cover your hair for up to 20 minutes before rinsing out with warm water. Condition it afterwards for best results.  If interested in lightening hair try going outside for those 20 minutes in the sun.

Charcoal is a natural wonder. Charcoal or activated charcoal is simply carbon and has been around for thousands of years and famous for removing poisons and toxins from our bodies. There’s an increasing number of activated charcoal shampoos on the market – thanks to charcoal’s absorption ability to draw dirt, oil, impurities and toxins from the hair and scalp. You can make one for yourself really easily by

Ingredients:
1 tsp. Activated charcoal powder
Favorite botanical shampoo
Baking soda Mix*

Instructions:
Add teaspoon of activated charcoal powder to your usual shampoo. Rinse out with a baking soda and water mix *(1 tsp. baking soda +1 cup warm  water) to remove all of the charcoal. If you prefer not to use shampoo at all, you can just add 1/4 teaspoon activated charcoal to a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of warm water, then rinse out.

We love the basics in baking soda. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate is a natural substance that is crystalline but but is seen as a fine powder. This alkaline (has a neutral pH balance) has amazing beneficial properties like antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.  Baking soda is a popular ingredient in DIY cleaning mixtures for clothes and home furnishings but it has usefulness in our hair too. It’s excellent for detoxifying hair as it absorbs grease and dirt and it’s gritty texture makes it workable as a gentle exfoliation of the scalp.

Ingredients
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup warm  water
ACV Rinse*

Instructions:
Simply stir baking soda in the warm water until it dissolves. Work the mixture into your scalp and hair, and then rinse thoroughly. *Follow that with an apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup apple cider vinegar + 2 cups water).

Apple cider vinegar has been a cure-all for decades. which kills bacteria and prevents it from multiplying. ACV is a form of vinegar produced from pulverized apples to produce apple juice that is fermented to apple cider and then re-fermented to ACV. It contains a number of natural nutrients such as vitamins, lactic, citric and malic acids as well as pectin, mineral salts and amino acids.  The main ingredient in ACV is acetic acid (a synthetic carboxylic acid with antibacterial and anti-fungal properties).

REJUVENATE YOUR HAIR & SCALP WITH COFFEE

It’s loved by many curlies who suffer from high porosity strands (such as myself) for smoothing the hair’s cuticle and sealing moisture in. Great for a final rinse on washday. This is also a good ingredient to use before installing jumbo box braids, since it removes the Alkaline Lye on synthetic braiding hair that can cause itching. Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a bowl of warm water, soak the hair for 20 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 cups water

Instructions:
Dilute the 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with two cups of water and set aside. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual before pouring the diluted ACV through your hair. Leave in and style as usual.  This simple rinse will not only close the hair cuticle but detoxify your strands.

Bentonite Clay is composed of aged volcanic ash. If that’s not a cool enough for wanting to use it, also know that Bentonite clay is one of the many healing clays that’s been used for centuries in the removal of toxins. It’s now being used in alternative medicine as a simple yet effective internal cleanser for several health ailments. In beauty, it can be used for the face and body and in recent years we are seeing it being used for clarifying or detoxifying hair without the use of harsh chemicals.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup Bentonite clay
1 cup water
favorite essential oil for fragrance (using one that also has cleansing properties like lavender or tea tree oil is even better!)

Instructions:
Simply mix Bentonite clay, water and a few drops of essential oils very well. Massage into wet hair and rinse off after five minutes.

Do not use any metal utensils with Bentonite clay. The positive charges from the metal can be pulled towards the clay and render useless and it will not have any effect.

Here’s a video on a recipe that I will be trying tomorrow as my hair needs some detoxing and get prepping for spring!

Here’s what Lyvona had to say about her video and treatment:

Lately my hair has been super dry to the point that my hair products weren’t even working like they should. When my hair gets to that point, i normally do an ACV rinse but this time i decided to try out a bentonite clay treatment and this is my first time doing so. The results were amazing and my hair felt softer and had more volume than it normally did. I know my mixture was a little lumpy but like I said it was my first time doing this lol. if you do decide to try it out, you can always tweak the recipe. doesn’t have to be exactly like mines. Enjoy!

Prodcuts Used:
a glass bowl.. make sure it is non-metal
plastic spoon
1/2 cup of Bentonite Clay
6 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar
6 tbsp of water

3 tsp of coconut oil

She simply rinsed well after keeping in for an hour and then applied her deep conditioner. I’m all over this recipe tomorrow!
