There is the flat twist out and the regular twist out and yes they have differences. The flat twist out requires you know how to cornrow, “The flat-twist out consists of parting hair into cornrowed sections but flat twisting the hair and allowing them to set before unraveling them for your desired style.” Naturallycurly.com There are over 1000 ideas on how to create natural hairstyles but learning the differences are most important!
Examples of Flat Twist out
Sumetra Reed from NaturalMetra shares her chunky flat twist out.
• Rich and Funky Moisturizing Cleanser
• Richee Rich Moisturizing Conditioner
• Extra Butter Brilliant Shine Creme
• Shining Star Hair and Scalp Elixir
Her method:
She shampoos and conditions her hair, detangling it at the same time. She then divides it into sections and starts working with the sections. She uses the Extra Butter and works it into the hair from the roots to the end then adds Shining Star to add shine and seal in the moisture. She uses a brush to detangle once more then twists the hair into the flat twists.
SHORT HAIR TRANSITIONING NATURAL HAIRSTYLES
She usually lets her hair just dry overnight then in the morning rubs in a little more shine crème just to boost the shine. She unravels the twists carefully to make sure that she doesn’t frizz the hair up by pulling on it or roughening it. She uses a comb to pick at the roots to add volume and cover up the lines from the twist. Her twists usually last for 5 days and she maintains it by sleeping in a satin bonnet.

Examples of a regular Twist out
Mini Marley shares her regular twistout
• Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
• Jane Carter Nourish and Shine
• DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel
• Design Essentials Coconut and Monoi Deep Moisture Oil Treatment
Her method:
She sections her hair starting from the parting, which for her, is the side part. She goes on to apply her Shea Moisture Curl Enhancer and then the Jane Carter. She does the same to all the other sections adding water as she goes to help the product distribute evenly. She adds the DevaCurl Gel to the section and then starts twisting. She closes off the twist with a finger curl and then leaves the hair till the next morning to air dry.
Vacation Hair, Perfect Natural Hairstyles For Fun This Summer!
She prefers to sleep on a satin pillow, instead of using anything on her hair. When the hair is finally dry, she rubs in the oil treatment before unraveling the curls, just to add some extra shine to the hair. She separates the curls carefully to prevent any frizz, using her pick and fingers to fluff out the roots to increase volume.
Both styles are beautiful and while the flat twist out gives more definition at the roots and more control of the style, the regular twist out is easier to do and less elongation.
