6 Natural Remedies For Fading Dark Spots

Dark spots and hyper-pigmentation is a common skin problem among African Americans and those with darker skin tones. Although these types of blemishes can be unsightly, they can be reversed over time with proper care and treatment.

While many have used bleaching creams and expensive treatments in salons but not everyone wants to go that route. Trying natural ingredients that many of us have in our own homes is a viable option.

If you are one of the many women who suffer from hyper-pigmentation here are 6 tips for fading those bothersome dark spots naturally and on the cheap.

Lemon Juice
Lemon juice naturally has bleaching properties with its alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). It is strongly acidic and its most important component is citric acid.

Simply squeeze the lemon juice from a fresh organic lemon into a small bowl. Apply the juice to your dark areas on a clean face with a cotton ball. Let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water and applying a moisturizer.

Another option is to mix some sugar into the lemon juice to make a paste and add a few drops of olive oil. Mix in before applying to your entire face as a scrub but concentrate more on the dark spots. Rinse off with cool water after 5 to 10 minutes.

Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is considered the "wonder plant" and it has antioxidant properties and a potent source of vitamins. It is great at healing scars and wounds because it aids skin regeneration.

Gently rub Aloe Vera gel on your dark spots. Leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes before washing face with cool water. Apply twice a day and should see improvement within a month.

Sandalwood Powder

This anti-aging  antiseptic time tested Ayurvedic ingredient that helps reduce hyper-pigmentation and soothing acne, blemishes, pimples and rashes.

Mix two tbsp. of sandalwood powder, two tsp. of rose water, and one tsp. each of glycerin and lemon juice and apply to spots. Allow to dry naturally before washing off with cool water. Apply a few times a week until you see improvement.

Honey and Yogurt

Honey is a natural humectant and moisturizer and when mixed with yogurt it becomes a bleaching treatment. Yogurt is no slouch as it's full of proteins, calcium, vitamins and probiotics. Yogurt contains lactic acid and which dissolves dead skin cells. Both ingredients are great for our skin.

Mix equal parts of the honey and yogurt and dab on your dark spots. Leave on for 30 minutes before washing with cool water.

Buttermilk also contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid and is great against blemishes and brown spots.

You can either use it by itself and dab on dark spots with a cotton ball and leave on for a few minutes before washing off. If you have oily or acne-prone skin add lemon juice to the buttermilk. Apply once or twice a day until you see improvement.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

This amazing product is great for your body and awesome for your skin. ACV helps to clarify your face while also diminishing brown spots.

Dilute apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water and a bit of honey. Apply to brown spots for a few minutes before washing off. Apply once or twice a day for four to five weeks.
