Natural hair means detangling sessions as our natural coils, kinks and curls love one another to the point of entanglement.  It is a nice way of saying our hair tangles unmercifully between attached and shed hairs.  Most naturals dread detangling as it can be a slow and sometimes painful task but ask anyone who has put off detangling too long and you will quickly find out just how important it is to do it!

Some naturals only spend a little time detangling (namely me) while others can spend hours.  Detangling can turn your washday into a nightmare but I’m not just saying this to upset you.  I’m here to put a smile on your face because there are some tools out here that can make those sessions much more pleasant!

There are tools designed to make your detangling sessions easier and shorter. Not every tool is necessary or even right for everybody but if you are natural and you deal with tangles, one (or more) of these tools need to be in your arsenal.

Denman Brush

The Denman Brush as been a favorite among Naturals for a long time now and for good reason.  It has been a major contender against tangles because it has anti-static rubber pad that provides maximum grip and control.  Some have modified it by removing some of the rows of teeth but it is one of the heavy-weights in detangling for naturals.

Detangling Brush

This wonder is the newest treasure as more naturals are falling in love with it (including me!). This Detangling Brush was originally for brushing tangles out of horse’s mane.  You heard me correctly but someone figured out it was a blessing for getting tangles out of curly hair on humans. It has a unique design with the top of the brush unhinged so it moves with your hair.  I love it and it is super cheap.  It was for horses, remember?

Q-Redew

As fall approaches it may be time to pick up one of these babies.  The Q-Redew is a handheld hair steamer that quickly restores moisture, rejuvenates and reshapes hair using warm steam as mist.  I have one and I love it.  If you are not a fan of dripping wet hair but need the moisture boost then this is the tool for you. Yes, it helps in detangling too!  I found that out when I used it this summer because it make the hair more pliable and easier to style while loosening up tangles.

Shampoo Brush

A scalp massage is not just for a nightly routine.  You can massage while you cleanse with this scalp-massaging brush with 42 soft rubber bristles that prep and stimulate blood flow.  The Shampoo Brush can relax you while you wash away the dirt, product build-up and sweat.  I haven’t tried it but apparently it is great for loosening tangles as you brush it through the strands.  Great for ensuring all the tangles are out.

Tangle Teezer

When this came out a few years ago it was all the rage.  The palm fitting tool was loved because the bendable plastic teeth glide gently through hair, quickly detangling knots without snarling or tugging on strands.  Some have had issues with the Tangle Teezer but by far more find it a requirement for detangling sessions.

Not every item will be for you but this list is worth checking out so tell me what’s your favorite below.

Happy detangling Naturals,

Sabrina
