Older Natural Feature – Licia

Older Natural Feature - Licia

CA. Certified Sisterlocks Image Consultant

Licia Bess-Ezeudu

1.  How long have you been Natural?
I’ve been natural since 2006.

2.  Why did you become Natural?
I liked the Sisterlocks style of tiny individual Locs that encourage the natural curl pattern  and hair growth.

3. Was it a hard transition?  How did you transition?
No actually it was very easy. The Sisterlocks pattern allowed my hair to remain uniformed, un-matted and grow. Allowing easy styling.

4.  Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
No.  Actually it was my lifestyle and franchise.  I wanted a hairstyle that was easy, natural and manageable, and low cost in comparison to weaves or perms.

5.  Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
My age at 53 makes it easier to be natural, but it’s more complex then that.  Age was just a part of that.  Being comfortable in your own skin and being more focused on other things outside of yourself gives you that break from stressing about your hair.  I can go natural, because I’m not worried about what people think.  I embrace myself naturally the way I am and age helped me get to this point.  Age and life experiences got me to this point.  I think it’s weird to have natural (hair) and it’s looked upon by society as being something new or unusual.  Locs have been around since biblical times.

6.  Do you see many Older Naturals in your area?  If so, what styles are they sporting?
I see many women with natural hair, because I am a Natural Hair Consultant.  The ladies and some men often wear their hair “freestyle”, but mostly women wear their hair curled in Updo’s or pulled back.

7.  How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I primarily wear my natural hair “freestyle loose”.

8.  Favorite products and/or product line?
My favorite product line is of course Sisterlocks Family products.  I use Sisterlocks Green Tea Shampoo, or Starter Shampoo occasionally. Once a month applying Sisterlocks Moisture Treatment leave-in 30 minutes and that’s all. If I chose to wear a set, I use Sisterlocks curl Set roll my Locs and then unrolled and spray with the styling hold spray. The curls last just about a week.

Although,  I COULD go without anything and my hair would still grow.  A healthy lifestyle physically and emotionally is important, along with a proper balance of moisture and cleanliness too.

9.  Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
Know yourself.  Gain confidence.  Recognize and understand your own style and comfort zone concerning your hair.  Know your monetary budget that your willing to spend.  Research all types of natural hair styles.  Connect with a professional that can help you obtain the best end product or look for your hair.

Licia was such a treat to share!  I love hair professionals who bring so much more than their journey to the feature.  They bring another side to natural hair that many of us enjoy hearing about.  I have to thank Licia for sharing and caring enough about the naturals who need some guidance as some of us bump around not sure about what we are doing.  She’s got GORGEOUS Sisterlocs and she is such a beautiful woman!  What a wonderful feature.

Now, I’m ALWAYS looking for more features so please step up to the plate and share.  You can email me your story to: seriouslynatural4@gmail.com or even contact me on my Facebook page.  I’m ready to share your journey.

Take care Naturals,
Sabrina
