Product Review – Shea Moisture Hair Color System

Product Review - Shea Moisture Hair Color System

Shea Moisture has become a much loved all-natural line with products for hair, body, and face.  They have blossomed into a massive and relevant company that many Naturals have heard of or tried. Earlier this year they launched a hair coloring system that made me happy since I had been too scared to try traditional dyes or henna.  My distrust of either left me feeling I was never going to be able to dye my hair and a hair lightening recipe I tried didn’t work for me.

Well, if you are like me you haven’t colored your hair using those harsher products that contain ammonia and you didn’t want to fool around with Henna. The only other option was using DIY hair lightening recipes that did not always work.  When Shea Moisture introduced this product I was tickled pink and felt finally ready to color my hair.  No, it’s not all-natural ingredients in their color line system but it was less harmful than regular dyes.

SheaMoisture is a groundbreaking natural haircare line that is redefining the art of hair color. Forging a new path in healthy coloring options, the SheaMoisture Color system is a gentle, ammonia-free coloring system that provides true, translucent color. This incredible alternative offers warmth, super hydration, natural and certified organic ingredients for all hair types. SheaMoisture Color System’s moisture–rich, no ammonia and no sulfates formula is enriched with certified soy protein ingredients to replenish protein. The formula adds a radiant shine, includes organic glycerin to provide enriched moisture and Flaxseed oil for manageability and sheen. Shea Moisture FB.

I already have fallen in love with many of their hair products and was ready to try the color.  This is not my first time using this hair color line but first time doing a review of it.  I chose Dark Golden Blond because I’m not a fan of reds but wanted a really light brown color.  I have dark brown hair which to me is pretty boring so a lighter color in the Summer sounded like fun.

They have cute boxes along with beautiful bags that hold everything you need to get started.  There is more than enough color as well as shampoo, conditioner and elixir so whether you have short or long hair you should be good to go with just the one box.

Product Review - Shea Moisture Hair Color System

I’m not a big hair person.  Never colored my hair myself nor permed it so my sister graciously agreed to do it for me.  Here’s a pic of my hair prior to the new color.  Now remember my hair was colored a few months ago using this system but I used a darker color than the one I used this time.

Hopefully you can see the roots as it was time for me to color it again.  I also have a few grays popping up in the front but they aren’t too much of a nuisance.  One of my biggest concerns using this product was my hair texture changing or the dye damaging my hair.  Yes, I wanted color but I didn’t want to pay the ultimate price for it.

Here we go!

*         Poor rating.  Will not be buying again ever!!

**       Mediocre.  Will not be buying again.

***     Average.  May or may not buy again.

****   Above average.  Will probably buy again.

***** Excellent!  Will buy again and may become a staple product.

Shea Moisture Hair Color System – Dark Golden Blond *****

I have never in my life fell in love with a hair color line but I have to say this is one to fall in love with!!!  My hair felt SOFTER after it was finished.  I already use the line they supply to shampoo and condition freshly dyed hair and I have been in love with that elixir for a minute!!  They give you more than enough but I have to say those bottle are hard to squeeze to get the product out.  That would have to be my only complaint.

The color was gorgeous and I’m happy but I must share that they do not recommend going more than two shades lighter or darker.  Since it didn’t have ammonia I was worried I would not get a true color but that was no longer a concern.  My hair is lighter that it was the first time I colored it and that was a little jarring at first but now that the dust has settled I’m really happy.

Freshly done and still wet.

Next day

Before and after

Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures but there is a huge change in my color and I’m happy with it.  My hair has not changed in texture nor does it feel hard.  I attribute that to Shea Moisture’s wonderful products.  My sister has used this line along with my daughter.  We are all very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want the harsh chemicals in traditional dyes or who doesn’t want to fool with Henna.

This can be found at certain Target’s so make sure to call to see which ones in your area have them. Now, some have complained about the price. It’s $14.99 but if you are concerned with a dye changing the texture of your hair or damaging your curls then you might wanna shell out the money to use a kinder product to your hair.  Also, if you have a red card at Target you get 5% off everything you buy and just recently they were running a mobile coupon with $5.00 off the hair coloring system!!  Staying on top of the sales is a great way to get the color a little cheaper.

I truly feel you will be happy if you give this product a chance and since my hair feels soft and silky I will be using this from now on whenever I want to color my hair.

Happy and kinder coloring Naturals,

Sabrina

I love the color Sabrina you look super cute I always use L'Oreal, Jazzing or Henna & Hibiscus. The lighter color really opens up your face. 🙂 Thanks for sharing I might give Shea Moisture a try once I see their color chart.

Thank you! I'm not one to color my hair too often so I was a little scared of such a drastic change. I'm happy now and I think you will enjoy trying their line.

Their color system worked well for me. It didn't harm my hair. Although my only problem is that the front (where I started) colored better than the back as I could tell the product was oxidizing quickly. I just have to go faster next time lol.
