Paige |
My name is Paige Ellean, I am in my 30s and I live in London, UK. I am the editor and natural hair blogger for Chic With Kinks and also the owner, product formulator and mixtress extraordinaire for TLC Naturals, a holistic, all natural, organic and vegan line of hair care products.
Chic With Kinks is my online space where I share my natural hair journey, as well as my little adventures with my kinks…amongst other things.
TLC Naturals is my product line where I aim to provide real natural solutions to real hair and scalp problems. With a background in holistic wellness and herbalism, I strive to create products that don’t just make your hair look good, they actually improve the quality, health and length of the hair over time.
The Grow It hair growth range of TLC Naturals hair products have been very well received with a lot of positive feedback and over 95% of users reporting visible hair growth and thickness in under 14 days of use.
The Scalp Therapy range of TLC Naturals hair products were formulated for scalp issues such as scalp eczema, dermatitis, dandruff, seb derm etc These have also received a lot of positive response from the users and customers.
I am currently developing a range of products for natural hair, kinks and curls, so watch this space 😉
1. How long have you been Natural?
I have been natural since December 2009.
2. Why did you become Natural?
I got a bit fed up of subjecting my hair to chemical damage via the use of relaxers and perms, as well as heat damage via heat styling tools like straighteners and so on.
3. Was it a hard transition? How did you transition?
I did initially attempt to transition and failed very miserably. Part of the reason for that was because I had no knowledge on how to care for transitioning hair. I was using the right sort of products and styling techniques, but the breakage got to me and I decide to just cut it all off.
4. Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
Not particularly, no.
5. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
I don’t think so; however, I have heard other people say that it would be easier for them to go natural if they were younger i.e. in their teens or twenties. They imply that women of a working age cannot or should not go natural as it can be unprofessional. I disagree. I believe that natural hair can be styled into smart hairstyles that are suitable for the corporate world. You do not need to wear your natural hair in a loose Afro all the time.
6. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area? If so, what styles are they sporting?
I do see older naturals. However, a lot of them wear their hair in locs or sisterlocs. Once again, they say that wearing locs is smarter and more professional looking than natural hair in itself.
7. How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
My natural hair consists of very fine strands that are very easily prone to breakage. For this reason, hairstyles like mini braids, mini twists, extensions or even weaves are not suitable for me. This is why I wear my hair in a loose undefined afro most of the time. For variation, I might wear it in a puff – with or without a fringe. When I want to wear a smart look for work, business meetings or an elegant dinner, I would wear my hair in some sort of bun or pinned updo hairstyle
8. Favorite products and/or product line?
My favourite products are the products I make myself for my product line, TLC Naturals, which can be found at tlcnaturalsonline.com
I created the product line to deal with some of the problems unique to natural hair, kinks and curls. The products were primarily for my own personal use, but my readers (amongst many others) loved them and thus, the product line was born.
9. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
I would strongly encourage them to go for it! Once you get the basics down, caring for your natural hair is such a breeze. All you need is an understanding of your own hair, the right hair care techniques and of course, the right products. These 3 things make such a huge difference to the health and beauty of your hair.
