Older Natural Feature – Michelle

1.  How long have you been Natural?

I did my big chop on Feb 12, 2012. I’ve worn my hair in a short style or sew in weave for

Maybe 3 years before that.

2.  Why did you become Natural?

I became natural partly because my hair was damaged due to over processing and because my daughter is natural and she kept trying to convince me to go natural. She would love it if I locked my hair but that is a huge commitment, I’m not ready for that just yet.

3. Was it a hard transition?  How did you transition?

My transition wasn’t really difficult because my hair was already short. My big chop wasn’t so drastic because I really didn’t need to cut a lot of hair off. I just let the relaxer grow out and trimmed it off.

 4.  Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
I think as we get older short hair looks better… My personal opinion. Love my TWA and I will probably keep it forever.

5.  Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
I think age made it easier because I didn’t care so much what others thought of my decision to go natural.  Sometimes younger people care too much, peer pressure.

6.  Do you see many Older Naturals in your area?  If so, what styles are they sporting?
I really don’t see many naturals in my area. In my office however, there are two ladies nearby that are natural and they are sporting the TWA’s.

7.  How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I wear my TWA in two strand twist outs everyday.

8.  Favorite products and/or product line?
I love the Shea Moisture line. I also love Let’s Jam custard and essential oils to retain moisture.

9.  Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?

I would love to tell anyone, of a certain age, that may be thinking About going natural, DO IT! I’m enjoying my journey And I know you will too!  Let’s face it we don’t have a log of time to fuss with hair and we’d like to make things as simple as possible in our lives. Why complicate it further with hair that is unheathly and damaged. Join the thousands of people who have decided to pave the way and make the journey… You won’t regret it!

I truly wanna thank Michelle for sharing her Natural hair journey with us.  She’s got thick gorgeous hair and it looks amazing on her.  Beautiful woman with a beautiful smile and I feel the same way she does about being older and being less worried about what others think.

Check out my new feature next Monday which is my Older Natural Feature day.  Come and share your story with us as well.

Take care Naturals,

I agree with her on many points. It seems that the older we get the less we care about others opinions. I didn't relax when I was pregnant with my son and that would of been a perfect time to go natural but I didn't. Pressure from my mother to not be nappy. Sign, oh well. She looks great.

She does look great and yes…I too feel being older has allowed me to not give a damn on MANY levels about what others think. Thanks for sharing.
