I have been natural since January of 2005. I wasn’t always a healthy natural though. I learned my lesson the hard way. Two words… Heat Damage..
How would you describe your hair?
I would describe my hair and thick, coarse, curly, and versatile.
What do you love the most about your hair?
I love that it is big, healthy, and you uniquely mine.
What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper & why?
My motivation to stop relaxing my hair and become natural was the desire to have a healthier head of hair and get my long, thick tresses again. At the time my hair was thinning, breaking, and damaged due to continuous relaxing and having it colored. My initial plan was to transition, but when I started to realize just how difficult and painful it was trying to manage my natural and relaxed textures, I big chopped immediately.
What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
My hair journey has been filled with all sorts of moments. There are some easy moments, some difficult moments, and also some angry moments. All which have helped me learn how to take better care of my hair and love it. The most memorable moment was when I finally accepted my big curly hair and loved everything about it. The moment I looked in the mirror and fell in love with my fro is my most memorable. I no longer felt like I only looked good with my hair straight. I probably straighten my hair once a year now and that’s just for trims.
I only transitioned about 2 weeks because my nerves and my patience were non-existent with trying to maintain my horribly damaged ends and my new growth. I was rocking the worst weave ponytail in life. I mean… lawd those edges honey… A MESS.. I looked a fool…lol
What have your experiences been as a ‘natural?’ Any memorable reactions from family or others?
Everyone wasn’t supportive of accepting of my decision to be natural, but I am stubborn and ultimately I am going to do what I think is best for me regardless to what others may think. The funny thing is, the more I embraced and loved my natural hair, the more others did as well.
What is your hair regimen (including fav products)?
I have recently just switched up my regimen/products just a bit and added GPB protein Conditioner,, and Curls Unleashed to give my hair more strength and moisture. Those 3 products have become my new must haves for my tresses. My routine now is very simple. Co-wash using Aussie moist or Suave (sometimes I use Curls unleashed or Shea moisture shampoo), Then I deep condition with my Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner, JBCO, and then braid or twist my hair using Curls Unleashed leave in and Shea Butter. I use to pre-poo with evoo and a cheapy conditioner and then co-wash or shampoo, but quite frankly ladies…I’m lazy.. o_O ..lol
I love Curly nikki, Black Girl Long Hair, Afrobella, MlleCafeAuLait, Eclark6..there are so many..I could on..
Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
I would tell the readers that reading, research; trial and error are all a part of the journey to achieving . It will be frustrating at times, but hang in there. Once you figure out what routine, styles and products work best for you, things will go much more smoothly.
