Older Natural Feature - Stephanie

Stephanie
I'm 35 and have been natural for three years. I stop using relaxers because my edges were thinning and creamy crack was no longer straightening my hair. It was also costing too much to maintain. Mentally, it was a hard transition. I chose to do the big chop. My husband is a barber and he was VERY hesitant about doing it. I ended up with less than an inch of hair all the way around. I was very self-conscious until my hair grew longer. I wouldn't leave the house without a lace front(which caused further damage and wasn't worth the price) or a full cap wig. I have really sensitive skin and the glues, tape, and hair would break me out in itchy hives.

My age had nothing to do with my decision to go natural. I see A LOT of older naturals in Dallas, both male and female. I love this area for that very reason. In Arkansas, you really don't see a lot of naturals. People stare at folks with locs. Here in TX, I see a lot of fros and short wash and gos. My primary style is a wash and go. I'm still learning about which ingredients I need to avoid, but so far, I like Yes to Cucumbers and Organix. My advice would be to do what works for your hair and not criticize other people about their hair. Way too much of this is going on.

Short and sweet and right on the money.  I must first thank Stephanie for sharing the ups and downs of being a Natural and how it truly is a mental transition.  It was one for me as well and the journey has been a great one.  In my opinion that creamy crack has robbed too many women of color of beautiful tresses and I'm glad we have one more off of it!

I am always looking for lovely Naturals (30 and older) to share so check out my Contact page for more info.

Take care Naturals,
Sabrina
