Older Natural Feature - Tanya

Tanya
1. How long have you been Natural?
I have been natural for 7 1/2 years.

2.  Why did you become Natural?
I became natural at the suggestion of my Dominican hair dresser and my husband. Both of them kept telling me and convincing me that I did not need to relax my hair.

3. Was it a hard transition?  How did you transition?
My transition to natural was not hard at all. I cut my hair 3 times (about 3-4 inches each time) to get rid of the relaxed hair. I only relaxed my hair about 3 times per year and never between May and October (I sweat a lot in my hair during the warmer months), so I had a lot of new growth.

4. Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
No, my age had nothing to do with it.

5. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
My age makes it easier to be natural. I don't have to be bothered with the latest style like some of the younger naturals do. I'm secure in the way I wear my hair and who I am.

6. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area?  If so, what styles are they sporting?
I have a couple of older friends who just began their natural journey in the last year or so, as well as my older sister who bc'd last month :). They wear twist outs, puffs and braids.

7.  How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I primarily wear my hair in two strand twists, especially September through March.

8. Favorite products and/or product line?
I love and use SheaMoisture, ReVe' Essentials, HoneyChileHairLove, LiaNaturals, CC's Naturals and Trader Joes Spa Condish. I also use my own shea butter mix.

9. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
Going natural is a big decision. You have to be ready to deal with two textures (if transitioning) and develop a regimen that works for you and your hair. Try sample sizes from different vendors to see what works for your hair. It is time consuming, but the reward of healthy hair is so worth it in the end. Best tip I can give is WATER is the BEST moisturizer.

Oh man, Tanya has some great advice that I have to repeat.  Going Natural is a big decision and it takes time to master your regimen and find products that work for you!  Trying samples is a great way to keep the cost down and I'll be sharing that tidbit of info for a future post!  Her hair is gorgeous and and frames beautiful face well.  What clear skin!  I am jealous and she's a mixologist to boot?  Gotta love the creative Naturals out here.

I just love this Monday feature and hope you all enjoy it as well.  I'm always looking for more features along with product reviews and guest blogger/vloggers.  Just check out my Contact page for more info.

Take care Naturals,
Sabrina
