1. How long have you been Natural?
I've been natural for 10+ years.
2. Why did you become Natural?
Sad but funny story: I was about to jump in the shower (without a shower cap), and the shower head was pointed in my direction. My whole entire head got wet!! This was a few days after I just got it done, so I cried like someone ate my last piece of cheesecake!! I was embarrassed about the crying and that was the last time I relaxed my hair.
Yes, it was hard! I had no idea what I was doing. I wish I had all of these natural hair blogs or videos we have now!
I started with cornrows/braids to grow out my perm. Went to Dominican hair salons to straighten it, then decided to rock a 'fro' courtesy of Miss Jessie's salon in Brooklyn. In 2006, I went to an African hair salon in Morrow, GA to get double strand twists, and I decided to leave them in so I can start my Locs.
4. Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
Yes, I had a strict Caribbean mother that only knew about relaxers. Finally in my 20s, I had a say. And the more she complained, the more I wanted to stick with it.
5. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
Easier. The older you get, the less you care about what others think, and the more confident and free you feel.
6. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area? If so, what styles are they sporting?
I see a lot of older naturals in Brooklyn. Mostly rocking long Locs, or Afros.
7. How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I wear my Locs in a high bun or ponytail. My favorite style was the pipe cleaner curls. I wore that ALL year last year.
8. Favorite products and/or product line?
Shea Moisture Elixir spray, Oyin Greg or Frank Juice, and Jinsa Shea Sunflower. (Product Junkie as you can see.) I mix each bottle with water to lighten the scent, and so it can last longer.
9. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
If you're natural already, have patience and keep it up! If you're thinking about it, just do it! Even my 60+ year old mother went natural and she LOVES IT!!
