Older Natural Feature - Mel

Mel
1. How long have you been Natural?
I started transitioning in April 2012 and my last relaxer was in late Feb/March 2012.

2. Why did you become Natural?
I wanted healthier hair.

3. Was it a hard transition? How did you transition?
It's been difficult trying to find the right products for my hair along with maintaining styles.  I am currently attempting a 1 year transition.
4. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
I thinks it making it kinda hard as alot of styles I see on others look to be for the younger crowd.  I'm turning 42 and don't feel like wearing a frohawk to work.

5. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area?
Yes, I have notice some older naturals.  I think they've been natural for some time, at least some of them, but I just didn't really recognize them until now.

5. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area? If so, what styles are they sporting?
Yes, I have noticed some older naturals.  I think they've been natural for some time, at least some of them, but I just didn't really recognize them until now.  They are wearing Wash and Go's, Loc's, and Afros.

6. How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I wear braid outs or bantu knot outs, I'll be getting braids next week to carry me through the summer.

7. Favorite products and/or product line?
My product inventor is pretty small:  Hello Hydration's and Tresemme Naturals conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in, Hot Six Oil.  I've just purchased some Apple Cider Vinegar and a travel size of Garnier Fructis.  Occasionally, I'll use some good ole hair grease.  I've ordered samples from Miss Jessies and Deva Curl but will hold off using them for a little while.  I'm waiting for some more natural hair growth.  Currently, I only have a good 1 1/2 to 2 inches.
8. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
Do your research, listen to your hair and tend to the new growth.  It's not necessary to purchase the expensive products as there are moderately to cheaper products that work just as good or even better.
I've got to thank Mel for taking out the time to share your Natural hair journey with us!  Love her hair and love her no-nonsense advice that is truly beneficial.  Miss lady does NOT look 42!  Gorgeous!!

Check out my new feature next Monday which is my Older Natural Feature day.  Come and share your story with us as well.

Take care Naturals,
Sabrina
