Older Natural Feature - Gwen "Gee"

1. How long have you been Natural?
I have been natural since February of 2000.

2. Why did you become Natural?
I could not find straight hair styles (that suit me) to save my life!  I liked braids, but they were tedious and expensive. So, much to my family’s dismay, I did the big chop and grew an Afro.

3. Was it a hard transition? How did you transition?
It was an experience transitioning because I was armed with only a book and a small collection of mental tidbits from other natural women.  Though a few were happy to share their journey, most guarded their regimen as if it were a state secret.

4. Did your age aid in your decision to go Natural?
I was 21 at the time and I think my age had no factor.  I have always been the kind of person that did what they wanted, despite the opinions of others.

5. Does your age make it easier or harder to be Natural?
I think it’s not an age dependent decision. It was more of a personal choice.

6. Do you see many Older Naturals in your area?
If so, what styles are they sporting?  In my area there are a good number of older natural women.  Most of them rock little Afros, a few keep their natural hair braided under a wig or sew-in, some proudly display their silver locs.

7. How do you primarily wear your Natural hair?
I wear my locs in a ponytail, using my other locs to tie them  up or just down.

8. Favorite products and/or product line?
Love Jamaican Mango and Lime, Nappturality by Latrisa Giles and Tea Tree loc and twist by Dark N Lovely.

9. Any words of wisdom or encouragement for other Older Naturals already Natural or thinking about it?
Nothing to it, but to do it!  Do your research:  join forums, facebook groups, interview other natural women and read books on how to keep your hair healthy from the inside.  Also, knowing your NATURAL hair type will assist you in developing your hair care regimen.

I want to thank Gee for sharing her wisdom.  She's gorgeous and those Locs are amazing!  I am in love with the pic above and she makes me have some Loc envy.
